Drill & Fill
Insulation
If you have finished exterior walls that are uninsulated, you may feel like the only option is to rip down drywall and start from scratch. While that is definitely possible, there are less invasive ways to insulate finished walls. Enter: Drill & Fill.
Drill & Fill is a method for insulating finished walls that doesn’t require tearing down the drywall. Instead, you simply drill 1-2 holes per bay and blow-in insulation. You can also drill holes through the exterior OSB after removing a few rows of siding. Holes are typically drilled at the top and bottom of each cavity to ensure that the bay is fully insulated.
Below we have photos where the homeowner decided to do a mix of hole locations- some from the outside underneath the siding, and some from the inside through the drywall.
Note, Thermal Shop does not remove or replace siding, or do any drywall repair. What we can do is provide and install wooden or plastic plugs to close the space until further repair is possible. For a Drill & Fill application, you’ll have to work with either siding or drywall contractors if you don’t know how to work with these materials yourself.
