Iowa City
Insulation Removal & Air-Sealing

An Iowa City homeowner of a 1968 single-story was intent upon having a “modern attic.” Aka- one that meets current Iowa energy code in terms of r-Value, has ventilation chutes installed to pave the way for his updated soffits come next spring, and one that is air-sealed properly from the rest of his house, greatly reducing the amount of conditioned air loss. The homeowner contacted Thermal Shop and we got to work!
Before: Old, damaged, and insufficient insulation strewn with a random assortment of stuff left by previous homeowners.

During: Removing the insulation exposed dozens of opportunities to air-seal the attic space. Cable, pipe, and electrical penetrations, top plates, and even a few holes.

During: This giant hole was only found after removing the insulation. Holes like this mean that conditioned air is freely being lost to the attic space, creating a drain on your energy bills and the lifespan of your mechanical equipment.
Because this hole was too big to simply close with can foam, we installed 2” insulating foam board over top, and sealed that with can foam.
During: Air-sealed baffles and block-outs were installed to prepare this house for a ventilated soffit update due in the spring. Cheers to the homeowner for hanging lights to help us see!

After: To finish this attic, brand new fluffy fiberglass was blown in overtop of the meticulous air-sealing, like adding a layer of wool underneath a windbreaker. This homeowner and home are prepared for Iowa’s wild climate for many years to come.
